Abuja Earthquake: FG Establishes Earthquake Observatory Centre In Nasarawa State University, Keffi

Sequel to the recent reports of earth tremor in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, Federal Government has selected Nasarawa State University, Keffi (NSUK) to host an seismological station that will monitor and predict incidents of earth quakes.

The Federal Government delegation from Nigerian Geological Survey Agency (NGSA) led by a Consultant from the Agency, Prof. A. A. Adepelumi, disclosed this moments ago while briefing the Acting Vice Chancellor, Prof. Suleiman Bala Mohammed in his office.

Prof. Adepelumi said the exercise is “an urgent national assignment that needs to be in place within the next 48 hours”.

He therefore requested from the Acting Vice Chancellor a space for the installation of seismological equipment to help monitor and proffer rapid response for earth quakes within the FCT.

The Consultant also disclosed that the agency will train some staff of the University that will man the Observatory Station who will, “from time to time transmit rhythms and data” of any incident of unusual beneath the earth activities.

The Acting Vice Chancellor, Prof. Suleiman Bala Mohammed, instantly directed the Physical Planning Unit (PPU) to earmark a location suitable for the facility and make ready within the next 48 hours.

He thanked the Federal Government for choosing the University for such an important development, and assured of management’s support to realize the objectives of the Agency.

Other experts in the delegation include, a Director from NGSA, Mr. Nelson Amangele, a member of the Committee Prof. Charles Ofoegbu and Prof. Abu Mallam.
