The Federal University of Petroleum Resources, Effurun (FUPRE) is the first of its kind in Africa – the university was established to build a specialized university to produce manpower and expertise for the oil and gas sector in the Niger Delta.

The university was approved by the Federal Executive Council meeting held on 14^th March, 2007 and admitted its first set of undergraduates in 2008.

At inception the Federal University of Petroleum Resources, Effurun (FUPRE) and the Petroleum Training Institute (PTI) shared facilities as directed by the National Universities Commission (NUC) until when the university, i.e. FUPRE moved to its permanent site and main campus at Ugbomoro, Uvwie LGA in the year 2010.
