Colleges of Education to Award Degrees As Nigerian Senate Passes New Bill

Nigerian Senate on January 25th, passed a bill for the repealing of the Federal Colleges of Education Act 1998 after a report by the Committee on Tertiary Institutions and TETFUND.

Senator Sandy Onor who presented the report on behalf of the Chairman, Ahmad Babba Kaita, said the main objective of the bill was to provide for a legislative framework to support the Federal Colleges of Education Act, 1998 and to allow Colleges of Education to run of degree courses under the supervision of the National Universities Commission (NUC).


The senator said that the bill empowers colleges of education to run degree courses on a full or part-time basis to nurture career teachers with the aim of making up for the shortfall of teachers across schools.

He added that the legislation would be a lasting solution to the yearning of the Nigerian people in the area of Teacher Education within the context of the overall national educational development agenda.
