UNICAL Lecturer Arrested for Alledgely Impersonating an INEC Official

A lecturer in the department of Philosopy at the University of Calabar (UNICAL), identified as Gabriel Agabi Akwaji, has been arrested by the police in Cross River State for allegedly impersonating an ad hoc staff of the Independent National Electoral Commission, (INEC), Dr. Dominic Abakedi, in the Presidential and National Assembly polls held on Saturday, February 25.

Mr. Gabriel Agabi Akwaji was arrested at the collation center in Okpoma, Yala Local Government Area of state with a fake Bi-Modal Voter Accreditation System, BVA Machine.

It was gathered that the suspect turned up at the Yache ward of Yala Local Government Area and claimed that Abakedi told him to represent him and execute the job. He was said to have gone missing after the elections concluded at 6:00 PM on Saturday, Feb. 25, and showed up at Okpoma, Yala Local Government Area headquarters at about 2:00 PM on Sunday, Feb.26, in the company of chieftains of a political party.


On questioning his whereabouts, a fracas ensued between the Chairman of the All Progressives Congress in the State, Alphonsus Eba Esq., and the agent of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, Sunday EmalujI.

Upon his arrest, a BVAS was found in his possession and it showed that 216 voters were accredited but the result sheets showed 250 votes cast.
